The MeToo movement in India brought to light numerous allegations of sexual harassment and assault and helped to raise awareness of the issue in the country.

बहुत सारी महिलाएं, एक साथ एक नारे पर उतर गई थी। और वो नारा था मैं भी, और उन्हों ने एक मूवमेट चला दिया था, मतलब हर जगह चाहे वो मीडिया हो, वर्कप्ले, या कोई भी ऑफिस, ऑर्गनाइजेशन, हर जगह महिलायें रास्ते पर उतर आए थे। क्योंकि सबको यौन उत्पीड़न कार्यस्थल पर मुझे सुरक्षा चाहिए। यौन उत्पीड़न से बचने के लिए इस आंदोलन का भी इतिहास में बड़ा हिस्सा है।
In 2006 Tarana Burke a social activist and a community organizer set up a campaign known as the „ Metoo campaign‟ against sexual harassment and sexual abuse particularly those who were of color and belong to underprivileged communities. Her inspiration to create this campaign emerged when a 13-year-old girl confided in her to tell that she was sexually abused and assaulted, having been unable to respond, the girl simply told „Metoo‟. From the time many people became a part of this campaign in order to create social benefit or to gain publicity. The term #Metoo was used for the first time on the Myspace network
The international #MeToo movement began in late 2018 (and continues to the present day) to manifest in areas of Indian society including the government, the media, and the Bollywood film industry. In India, the Me Too movement is seen as either an independent outgrowth influenced by the international campaign against sexual harassment of women in the workplace, or an offshoot of the American “Me Too” social movement.
Me Too began gaining prominence in India with the increasing popularity of the international movement, and later gathered sharp momentum in October 2018 in the entertainment industry of Bollywood, centered in Mumbai, when actress Tanushree Dutta accused Nana Patekar of sexual harassment. This led many women in the news media, Indian films, and even within the government to speak out and bring allegations of sexual harassment against a number of perpetrators.
